India’s outstanding outcome at the FATF Mutual Evaluation and the adoption of
the Mutual Evaluation Report at the FATF plenary in Singapore is a significant milestone
in the nation’s effort to combat money laundering (ML) and terrorist financing (TF). It
places India in the elite list of select G20 countries that have achieved the “regular
follow-up” category. FATF has recognized and appreciated the Indian efforts in
mitigating risks from ML/TF, its execution of a slew of measures to transition from
cash-based to a digital economy which reduces ML/TF risks, and implementation of steps
towards financial inclusion, amongst many other initiatives that enhance traceability of
financial transactions.
India thus stands tall in the comity of nations and this status is a testament to the
unfailing efforts of all stakeholders - the Government and its ministries, FIU-IND,
Regulators, Reporting Entities, Fintechs and RegTechs, and many more financial soldiers
who have contributed in their own way. The outcome also demonstrates India’s commitment
towards fighting crime along with the global community.
It is time to celebrate and this publication is towards enhancing knowledge and
appreciating the mutual evaluation process besides acknowledging the efforts of the
community that is fighting financial crime. We applaud the efforts of all concerned
sectors but at the same time, there is a greater responsibility to shoulder hereon in
terms of enhancing the effectiveness of measures.
